F 16 Aggressor The real shame of it is there is a fine, fine flight simulator at the core of Aggressor. Sometimes when I’m cleaning my ears I push the Q-tip just a little too far in, and it hits something that hurts like hell. It kind of hums for a while and then settles into a dull ache. The thing is, I can experience this sensation all I want for about a quarter cent per tip, whereas Bethesda would have me pay upwards of $40 for relatively the same sensation. That throbbing in the brain, that jabbing pain in the head: That’s about what I took away from Bethesda’s first attempt at a flight simulation, F-16 Aggressor.

F-16 Aggressor has puzzling aspirations. The designers actually set out to re-create Strike Commander. Remember Strike Commander? It was going to be Origin’s flight sim version of the Wing Commander format, a narrative-driven mercenary flight simulation. Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out quite right. It was incredibly late, pretty buggy, and just not all that impressive. So of course it makes perfect sense to emulate it. And then, to really nail the lid down, GSI emulates it badly.

The real shame of it is there is a fine, fine flight simulator at the core of Aggressor. GSI has modeled the F-16′s flight properties with commendable detail. The funky handling of the rudders at certain speeds, tough landings, speed bleeding, and other things related to flight are all smack on. It’s a flight model worthy of the best F-16 sims, poised to offer the hard-core crowd everything it could demand… until you get to the systems modeling. These are more on par with a Novalogic game. The complex instrument modeling of Falcon 4.0 and other true hard-core sims is only hinted at in Aggressor.
Graphically, while F-16 is quite good, if at times mind-blowing, it’s true that there are better-looking, better-performing sims out there. The terrain is a bit patchy, but object modeling is good. Cockpits look very good and have effective dynamic animations for throttle and stick. HUD overlays and quick-view keys provide excellent perspectives on the instruments. In another stunning lapse, however, GSI has failed to include a padlock view. This makes situational awareness well nigh impossible and deals another serious blow to the sim.

Crazy Taxi

Crazy Taxi Game main objective of the game is to pick up customers and take them to their chosen destination as quickly as possible. Along the way, money can be earned by performing stunts such as near misses with other vehicles. The player is directed to a destination by a large green arrow at the top of the screen. The arrow does not adjust based on obstacles, but rather points in the general direction of the destination. Once the player arrives near the destination, they must stop within a specified zone. When the destination is reached, that customer’s fare is added to the player’s total money earned, a ratings are awarded depending on how long the player took to complete the journey. If the customer’s timer runs out before the player reaches the destination the customer jumps from the taxi.

Players can select three, five or ten minute settings, or the Arcade Rules used in the original coin-op version of the game. In the three time-limited settings, play continues for the designated period of time, after which the cab automatically stops and no more points can be scored. Under Arcade Rules, the player starts with an initial time limit of one minute, which can be extended through time bonuses earned for quick deliveries. Console versions of the game also feature a mode known as Crazy Box, a set of minigames that feature challenges such as picking up and dropping off a number of customers within a time limit, bowling using the taxi as a ball, and popping giant balloons in a field.
The arcade version of the game includes sixty levels, and an additional “Original” stage was added for the console versions. Both levels are based in sunny coastal California locales, with steep hills and other strong similarities to San Francisco. The player has a choice of four drivers and their cabs, each of whom has slightly different attributes.

Knight Rider

Knight Rider might not seem like the most obvious licensed property to base a game on. When you get right down to it, the original 1980s television show was about a talking, crime-fighting car that could do tricks. The car in question was KITT (the Knight Industries Two Thousand), and it could get up on two wheels, jump over things, and perform other ridiculous feats that were usually specific to the plot of any given episode. And developer Davilex has tried to implement these car tricks in Knight Rider for the PC, making for a strange game that’s almost like a cross between a traditional racer and a platform-jumping action game.

The levels are laid out like stunt courses.
Knight Rider has two types of missions: those that require you to race, and those that require you to explore. In this respect, it is similar to SCi’s violent car-combat game Carmageddon 3. It is also similar to Carmageddon 3 in that the racing sections are fun, but the exploration sections are tedious. Unfortunately, you often have to do both in any given mission. Knight Rider isn’t a bad game–it’s just too short and too repetitive. Most missions will require you to chase a helicopter or another car, drive around a compound and scan buildings, or both. The game is full of time limits, requiring you to “Stop that helicopter!” or “Get to the transmission station!” in some short period of time. It’s usually not very difficult–in fact, for some reason, the time limits are really only a factor in the training missions. The “hard” difficulty setting makes things a little more challenging, but on the easy or normal settings, you can finish all the game’s missions in one or two tries.

Need for Speed 4 High Stakes

It plays very much like Need for Speed 4, but with some extra play modes and one big added feature. I reviewed Need for Speed 4 more than a few months ago and loved the game. It had a few shortcomings, but they were minor and insignificant compared with the outstanding gameplay and graphics. When I first played Need for Speed 4, I thought it was vastly superior to Need for Speed II. Now that I’ve played the next Need for Speed game, High Stakes, I have to ask myself: Does it surpass the third installment as easily as the third surpassed the second? Not exactly. That doesn’t mean the game is bad or even worse than Need for Speed 4. It just isn’t a huge leap in terms of graphics and gameplay. Those who buy this game should realize that it plays very much like Need for Speed 4, but with some extra play modes and one big added feature. The biggest feature added to the game is car damage, which we’ve all been crying for since the inception of this fine arcade racing series. I’m happy to say that on this count, the game benefits greatly from damage modeling. All cars have ratings for body, engine, suspension, and handling. Too many bumps, scrapes, and crashes will bring those ratings down. At first, the damage is subtle, but once you start racking up the collisions, you’ll see the car’s body start to warp, the windshield and windows break, and the engine start to smoke. Tires will be off kilter, and you’ll notice the performance of your car suffering commensurately. There is no way to fix your car during a race, so you are in a bind should the damage be extensive. There is a status window on the top right corner of your screen, though, so you can monitor your damage and respond accordingly. You might want to be less reckless if you see the red damage-indicator bar overtaking the blue status bar. For Need for Speed purists who don’t want to play with damage, this option can be toggled off.

Need for Speed 5 Porsche Unleashed

Need for Speed 5 Porsche Unleashed possesses one of the worst collision-detection routines ever seen in a racing game. Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed strays from several conventions previously established by the popular arcade-style exotic-car racing series. For one thing, like its name suggests, Porsche Unleashed features automobiles exclusively from one manufacturer. What’s more, the game has a more detailed, more realistic driving and physics model than its predecessors, though the game’s realism is scalable. And while Porsche Unleashed has a few minor shortcomings, it nevertheless stands as the most ambitious game in the series since the original. As such, it’ll more than likely make you love the Porsche on the off chance you don’t already.Porsche Unleashed looks good enough to do justice to its prestigious German sponsor. The game includes many dozens of different Porsche models from the manufacturer’s 50-year product line, and each one bears the unmistakable curvature of a Porsche. The 3D car models are highly detailed: The cars all have working turn signals, brake lights, and headlights, and when you look at them in the garage, you can even check the engine under the hood, pop the trunk, or view the car’s interior. The cars shine in the sunlight and reflect street lamps at nighttime, and they can also get noticeably damaged. You can clearly see their independent suspension at work as they corner, thanks to the game’s realistic four-point physics model, and you can even see their drivers turning the wheel and shifting gears. You can drive the cars from a 3D cockpit view, from which you get a great sense of speed, but the cockpit view’s limited visibility and slower frame rate – as well as the muffled engine noise – make the cutaway first-person view preferable, though you can also select from two external perspectives. The cars in Porsche Unleashed don’t look totally perfect, as some of the minor details such as the door handles are part of the texture maps, rather than part of the polygonal geometry. But such details are only evident if you spend a lot of time gawking at your cars in the garage, rather than racing them out on the streets of Europe.

Castrol Honda Superbike

Castrol Honda Superbike It isn't a horrible game, but other han offering a strong simulation aspect, there's not much there. Electronic Arts has proven with the Moto Racer series that it knows what a good motorcycle racing game is. That's why it is so disappointing to see that Castrol Honda Superbike is so noticeably inferior. It isn't a horrible game, but other than offering a strong simulation aspect, there's not much there. Castrol Honda Superbike, as the name implies, is a racing game that exclusively features real Honda RC45 racing bikes that you can race on 14 real tracks from around the world. The game has several different settings that let you customize your bike. Most notable are the different sprocket settings that let you change your bike's gear-ratio settings. Each gear can be adjusted so that you can tailor and maximize your motorcycle's performance for each track. The control of the bikes is actually quite good, especially when using the Dual Shock controller one stick steers the bike while the other adjusts your speed. The bike reacts as it would in real life, which means that when you're going around a tight turn you must take it at a reasonable speed so your bike doesn't go slamming into a wall. If this is a problem for you, the game does offer six different difficulty settings, some of which have options that help steer your bike for you while you turn, as well as reduce your bike's speed so that you can make the turn. The AI of the track's seven computer-controlled bikers isn't anything special. The bikers just race along the course in a standard staggered style so that at just about any point in the race you have someone to directly compete against. If you do decide to race this other player, the game features a two player head to head split screen mode.
